Dogs are pack animals. In the wild the pack of dogs sleeps, hunts, eats and plays with each other. Dogs spend most of their time with the pack. Since dogs were domesticated. Many things have changed. Dogs have become a part of the human family. Dogs have become pampered and well cared for pets. Dogs are a popular choice for a pet but they are rarely kepts in packs. Owners need to mirror the dogs natural activities as they are accustomed to from way back when they were still living in packs. One of which is making sure the dog has plenty of toys. Children love toys. Dogs are not kids. Why then do they need toys?
Bonding time with owners
Dogs are loyal and giving animals. These pets provide the family with loads of happy moments. Playing with the dog is a good way for the dog and the family to bond. Dogs enjoy playing Frisbees and catch ball with the children.
Exercise
Dogs have a requirement for exercise. Exercise is essential to tone the muscles and bones and to develop well functioning vital organs of the body. In the wild, dogs have all the opportunities to roam, to run and to play. Walking is something dogs like. This is why good dog owners make sure that their dogs get plenty of exercise. Throw and activity toys would be a good replacement if it is not possible to take the dog walking.
Home alone
A lot of dogs are left at home alone all day. Often boredom is the result. Dogs like to be around others. They need to interact with their people and with other animals. We know that bored dogs are destructive dogs. Giving the dog toys keeps them busy and prevents destructive behaviour. Giving the dog a few good toys prevents the development of destructive behaviour.
Dog’s toys
Dogs like to chew. Teething pups often chew to soothe the pain from teething. Allthough chewing develops the jaw muscles and decreases the chance of teeth and gum related problems, the primary purpose is to ease boredom. Give the dog chew toys but ensure that the toys are big enough not to allow them to be swallowed by the dog. Activity toys like balls, frisbees and other fetch oys not only keep the dog in shape but also stimulates the dogs mind. Toys can be used as rewards and positive reinforcements when training the dog. Toys with hidden treats like Kong toys will be associated by the dog to the performance of a command.
