We are aware of the dog’s gargantuan appetite. Dog owners are aware that their furry friends are not choosy eaters. Look how they eat non-edible things. Owners may provide the dog expensive high quality food but the dog will not pass up the chance to eat poop. As vets and other dog experts would tell us, dogs and chicken bones will be a potentially dangerous combination. Thus, if you have a bucket of KFC to munch on while watching Avatar, you better make sure that the dog is in another room.
You may have prevented the dog from eating the forbidden chicken bones but the fact is… you cannot have your eyes glued to the beloved pooch at all times. What if the dog has raided the trash can and ingested the bucket full of chicken bones? Nothing much can be done to correct a potentially dangerous situation if the bones are already ingested by the dog. What you can do now is to carefully observe the behavior of the dog and to examine if the bones were excreted with the stool.
Dogs have this unaccountable liking for bones. Bones are considered by dogs as treasures that must be buried and kept hidden. But why are chicken bones dangerous for the dog? Cooked chicken bones are especially dangerous because it becomes brittle. The bones can easily splinter when gnawed by the dog and when ingested, the stomach and the intestines can be ruptured by the sharp slivers. It is possible that the sharp shards can be embedded on the mouth or pierce the throat. Chicken thigh bones are especially unsafe to be ingested by the dog. The long and thicker thigh bone, once broken into splinters when chewed by the dog would pose more danger.
Observe the behavior of a dog that has eaten chicken bones. A change in behavior will be noticed if the bones have punctured the mouth, the throat or the innards of the dog. Take note of the dog’s stool. If it is tinged with blood or if the dog is straining to defecate, don’t procrastinate; take the dog to the vet’s.
Chicken bones are normally passed with the feces. Apart from preventing bone splinters from piercing the stomach and intestines, additional food intake will make the dog pass more stools. A can of pumpkin will make the dog throw up. And hope that the bones will be vomited by the dog .
